New Kinds Of Coffee Machines

Friday Jun 19, 2009

There is hardly anyone who does without coffee these days. The problem with that is that when something becomes such an integral part of our lives, you can really go crazy if you don’t have it. That certainly has become true of coffee. We have become so accustomed to it that we cannot even start our day without a cup of coffee. So we all need a really good coffee maker in our homes to make our lives more liveable. If you are interested in one of the best ideas for a coffee maker, a thermal coffee maker, you have to make sure you check the ratings on the one you are interested in. These ratings are essential in determining which are the best prices for the coffee maker with the features you are interested in.

You can always choose the older models of coffee makers. You can choose from drip coffee machines, French presses or the really old fashioned hand press machines. Now we also have coffee machines that work with individual coffee pods for ultimate convenience, which force the water through the coffee like an espresso machine. Many true coffee connoisseurs will still only want the true espresso maker. With all of this choice, it is imperative to make sure you can get the ratings on each of these machines so you know what you are getting.

If you haven’t looked into thermal coffee makers, you may find that they are an easy choice. Thermal coffee makers keep your coffee hot for hours. And, the best advantage is that they do this while still preserving the fresh taste of the coffee. There are thermal coffee makers that hold up to ten cups. This is ideal for a large family kitchen or office setting where you want to have the coffee available for a long time, but fresh, for everyone. The carafes for these machines are ideally made of stainless steel, so you don’t have to worry about breakage. The secret of these thermal coffee makers is their double wall ca rage that keeps the coffee hot and tasty for hours.

There are a lot of other features to choose from on these coffee makers. Perhaps you want a programmable timer, swing away basket, auto shutoff, or permanent filters. You can even get clocks and nightlights built in. A pause feature is good to have if you like to take the carafe out and pour yourself a cup before the coffee is finished brewing. If it is an important feature for you, you can also obtain a coffee maker that has additional lids that are color coded so you can have different pots going with regular, decaf, flavored, etc.

Did Starbucks Stumble on Service?

Friday Jun 19, 2009

The buzz in the world of coffee these days is not being produced by caffeine intake. It’s generated by the swirl of news reports and comments about Starbucks plans to close over 600 stores.

For me this begs the question: Did Starbucks stumble on their vaunted customer service? As Starbucks has become an American icon, as much a part of our landscape as McDonald’s and Wal-Mart, have they lost their customer service edge? Has growth come at the cost of serving their customers in their unique way, the way loyal Starbuckians have come to expect?

There is evidence to suggest this is the case. In a recent BBC News article, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz commented on the “dilution of the Starbucks experience”. He added “the firm had lost its focus”. Comments from Starbucks customers also support this notion:

From OregonLive.com

And some customers who say they have asked a barista to make them a cup of bold coffee say they have been refused.

An employee on the other end of the line offered her a free replacement, and when Curry stopped by the store two days later to pick it up, a store manager accused her of running a scam.

From OrlandoSentinel.com

There have been other disturbing signs over the past five years. Staff turnover seems epidemic; I seldom see the same faces on repeat visits. I read about poor staff morale…And staff seem less knowledgeable about the coffees and each blend’s character.

Author Kim Fellner, asked “Can Starbucks really be big and good at the same time?” And her answer seems to be “no, they can’t”. In interviews with Starbucks employees she heard comments like this: “When I started six years ago, this was the best job of its kind. Now it’s all about the money. It’s like nobody cares about us any more.” And if employees feel their company does not care about them, the chances are they’ll care less about the customers.

But, I’d bet my mortgage payment that for every bad customer service story at Starbucks there’s a good one.

In what is probably the most astonishing example of an employee putting her customer first, Starbucks barista Sandra Andersen gave up one of her kidneys for a customer. Maybe that’s too far beyond the norm to even count. But more typical examples abound:

From Telegraph UK

It’s not about the coffee, the latte or anything else for that matter. It’s about the ambiance. A temporary haven to duck out of the grind of a hectic morning/afternoon and relaxing over a coffee, tea etc.

From Galesburg.com

The monthly coffee seminars, the friendly (and quite often funny) conversations in the cafe and the drive (through), and the knowledgeable staff make this a top-notch establishment.

Across the USA, communities are asking Starbucks to reconsider closing their favorite Starbucks. How’s that for customer loyalty? Having your customers beg you to stay! Most companies can only imagine having such a bond with their customers.

It’s easy to assume Starbucks growth into the 8000 pound gorilla of coffee shops had a deleterious affect on their ability to offer the same customer experience that made them famous. When you have 16,000 stores and over 300,000 employees, it’s hard to be on your “A” game with every single customer interaction. There are bound to inconsistencies, foul-ups and a general change of culture. It’s a natural side effect of growth.

At the same time though, Starbucks has drilled themselves into the lives of their customers like few global goliaths ever have. They’ve become a part of the fabric of their host communities, a fabric many people do not want torn.

So, is Starbucks retrenching because of bad customer service? Lacking any sort of scientific data I’ll go with my gut and say no. Customer service is not the reason Starbucks is slowing. I think it’s a combination of many things like the economy, competition and the evolution of their market. Though many of their stores probably fail to deliver the typical Starbucks experience, overall I think they do a pretty decent job.

Get The Best Coffee

Wednesday Jun 17, 2009

There is no need to settle for inferior coffee, whether you are at home or away. It takes a little extra care, but you have to do more than just expect the water to drip through the ground coffee. If you take just a few extra steps, you will make the best tasting and freshest coffee you have ever had.

The first step is to have fresh, cold water in the coffee machine. Do not use warm water or water that has been boiled. Truly fussy coffee drinkers will even use filtered or bottled water, to assure even more purity. If you have hard water or old pipes, or chlorinated water in your home, you may want to consider that as well.

It is important to have the right temperature for the water as it comes out when you are brewing your coffee. Ideally, it should be between 195 and 205 degrees. If the water is hotter than that, the coffee may become too bitter, and if it is too cold, the water will not be able to absorb all of the flavor from the ground coffee, and after the first ounces, the coffee will be weak and distilled tasting.

If you are one of the few people today who still press brew their coffee, make sure you let the water sit for a moment or two in order to reach this optimal temperature.

It is always a good idea to use a hot coffee carafe in your coffee machine. You can do this simply by putting hot water into it and let it stand a while before you put the carafe back in the coffee machine.

Picking the proper coffee grind for your coffee will be one of the most important steps toward a perfect cup of brew.
Even though it may say it on the label, there is really no such thing as an all purpose brew. If you are using a press pot, you will need a completely different kind of brew than you will if you are using an electric coffee maker. For optimum results from a press pot, buy coffee beans and grind them just before brewing. You can obtain an inexpensive grinder that will work just fine to get the medium to coarse grind (grinding for 10 seconds) that works better with this type of coffee brewing. If you are grinding for an electric coffee pot, you will have to grind a little longer to get a finer grind (15 to 20 seconds) that works better in an electric pot.

Just Why Is An Espresso Good For You

Tuesday Jun 16, 2009

If you were to carry out a search on Google for “Why an espresso is good for you?” you would be amazed at the search results you would find. In nearly all articles you will see that they are saying the good news is that coffee is good for us after all.

So just what health benefits can I possibly expect from drinking a cup of hot brown espresso. However, what is important that any coffee you do drink must contain caffeine in order for it to work effectively.

The reason it seems that drinking espresso coffee may be beneficial to a person’s health is because of the anti-oxidants that it contains and which many people are unaware of. It does not matter whether you are drinking either a straight espresso or a cappuccino they both contain the same amount of anti-oxidants within them. But what is important to remember that coffee is only really good for you if you drink it in moderation. But now let us take a closer look as to why espresso and other forms of coffee are beneficial to a person’s health.

Well firstly you are less likely to suffer from diabetes. In fact in data analyzed by Harvard researchers they found that drinking between 5 to 6 cups of coffee each day could slash the chances of men suffering from Type 2 Diabetes by 54% and for women by 30%.

Also in another study carried out by the Scottish Heart Healthy group they looked at 11,000 men and women aged between 40 and 59. It was found that those who drink large quantities of coffee were more likely to lower the chance of them dying from heart disease.

Another reason drinking espresso is good for you is that in studies carried out with regard to Parkinson’s disease. It was found that those men who drink between 4 and 5 cups of coffee each day cut the risk of developing this disease by nearly half compared to those men who drink little or no coffee at all.

Until I went looking on the Internet I never realized that drinking something so tasty could be good for my health. So many things that benefit my health long term are not all that much fun. It is refreshing to find something I really like will help me stay in better health. So as you can see there are many reasons as to why an espresso is good for you.

A Good Excuse To Drink More Coffee !

Sunday Jun 14, 2009

When I was in high school our principal, Mr. Watkins was an avid coffee drinker. And when I say “avid”, I mean nobody stood in between Mr. Watkins and his pot of coffee. Mr. Watkins day wouldn’t start unless he had at least a pot and a half of coffee in his belly. He was a bit high-strung, which the teachers that worked directly ender him blamed his constant “one cup right after the other” coffee drinking mentality. One day the teachers decided to secretly change his regular coffee to decaf in an effort to calm him down. It didn’t work. They didn’t take into consideration that he had just quit smoking weeks earlier. It wasn’t the coffee that made him that way, it was his nervous withdrawals from quitting smoking.

The truth is coffee has very little effects on heavy coffee drinkers like Mr. Watkins. For Individuals who regularly consume coffee/caffeine has no effect on blood pressure. For people who have not consumed caffeine for a certain period of time, drinking coffee can lead to a small, short-lived increase in blood pressure. In fact, if your a coffee drinker with high blood pressure, it wasn’t the coffee that made you that way. My research shows that stopping coffee consumption is of no benefit to people with mild hypertension. There is no evidence to suggest that continued consumption of coffee father compounds hypertension in any diagnosed patients. Actually, regular coffee drinkers don’t even have comparatively higher blood pressure than non coffee drinkers. As the body quickly becomes tolerant to caffeine’s effects on blood pressure.

You may ask, well, there’s no effect on blood pressure, but what about other conditions like cholesterol or palpitations, what about increased risk for certain types of cancers like ovarian cancer or bladder cancer? No, no, no. In general, people who drink coffee do not have higher cholesterol levels than people who obtain from coffee drinking. Heart palpitations? No. Research shows that individuals may experience palpitations(irregular heartbeats). Irrespective of whether they are consuming coffee or not. Ovarian cancer? No conclusive evidence that coffee/caffeine consumption increases the risk of ovarian cancer. Bladder cancer? In 1990, The International Agency For Research On Cancer evaluated coffee, caffeine, tea, and latte’, after assessing the research, gave coffee the classification 2B which is possibly carcinogenic to the human urinary bladder. Coffee was cleared in all other areas.

Honestly folks, I’ve done an awful lot of research on the effects of coffee and caffeine and I haven’t found anything to raise any suspicion or worry. My conclusion is Mr. Watkins had the right idea all along. So, drink up folks, it isn’t bad for you. And like the title says,” That’s a good excuse to drink more coffee”

As always, I hope this article was both informative and entertaining. Thank you for reading and may GOD bless you always, and in always.

A Tale of Two Heavyweights: Organic Coffee Vs. Traditional Coffee

Friday Jun 12, 2009

A heaping of organic coffee powder being tossed into your steaming hot milk in the mornings is an experience in itself. That’s not knocking traditional coffee, which also turns tired bodies to life in a matter of minutes. Today, many consumers have switched to organic fruits and vegetables in an attempt to fend off pesticides, live healthier, and to stay environmentally conscious. As a result, the more serious coffee enthusiasts have been forced to pay premium prices for organic coffee as a result of Fair Trade and the complexity of its production. Just how is organic coffee produced that justifies this expense?

To begin, organic coffee production differs from traditional company in that organic coffee plants grow under shade trees, which serve to purify the soil and prevent water contamination. Given the limited number of shade trees, many coffee growers have opted to produce bigger crops in the middle of pesticide and fertilizer infested territory given the larger surface area. Unfortunately, there is no way to produce non-organic coffee without the use of synthetic chemicals that have been known to harm the environment. Since pesticides pollute the soil, much question has been raised over the declining taste of coffee and its effects on health.

In addition to nurturing organic coffee beans, shade trees also double as habitats for birds that prevent pests from touching organic coffee crops. In essence, they are nature’s replacement for pesticides. Today, an ideal plot of land for organic coffee is a small farm with plenty of shade trees and a sizable bird population for pest control. Organic coffee thrives so much in these conditions that the United States requires all of its organic farmers to use this type of land.

In conclusion, organic coffee is grown under better and more stable conditions than traditional coffee. With smaller farms and its shade trees replacing large coffee plantations soaked with pesticides, organic coffee is your best bet towards a better environment and a salute to your health.

A Black and Decker Coffee Maker?

Friday Jun 12, 2009

Black and Decker is a name synonymous with quality tools. This brand of product has moved from the workbench into the kitchen with appliances like the Black and Decker coffee maker. This must-have in kitchen supplies can be found in a number of stores and some can be bought in online stores as well.

When I saw that Black and Decker coffee machines were in stock at my local retail store I made sure to invest in a unit for my home. We have always relied on this quality brand for power tools and accessories. It is only fitting that we would adopt Black and Decker coffee into our kitchen as well.

This was one of the best investments I have ever made in a kitchen appliance. The coffee that the unit produces is beyond excellent and I know that I have a quality product that will last a long time. We do punish our Black and Decker coffee machine and it is really standing the test of time.

Having a big family that drinks a lot of coffee on a regular basis can wreck havoc on a regular machine. The Black and Decker coffee maker is far more resilient than other machines that I’ve owned. I would invest in a new unit every couple of years when I bought other brands.

The Black and Decker coffee maker has been time-tested in our home and it has passed with flying colors. I host many home parties that require quite a bit of coffee. We have been known to use the Black and Decker coffee maker upwards of six times in a single day. The machine brews one perfect pot after another.

I love that I never have to worry about coffee when I host an event and I love that my guests are always pleased with the results. The Black and Decker coffee maker is definitely worth the money. Actually, the unit is relatively inexpensive and you know that you won’t need a replacement any time soon.

We have adopted this kitchen appliance into the fold of our home and when this machine has finally run its course we will replace it with another Black and Decker coffee maker. I have owned the useful appliance for a few years and I really don’t see the need to replace it any time soon.

Other coffee makers do wonderfully for normal use. However, if you have a houseful of dedicated java drinkers you really want to consider the Black and Decker coffee machine. This appliance will stick with you for years to come.

Four Generations of Yummmmm!

Friday Jun 12, 2009

In the small seaside village of Abruzzi, Italy the D’Eliso family woke to a bright new dawn. The year was 1910. Pop D’Eliso looked forward to realizing his life long dream of prosperity that was rumored to abound in the new world. They were on their way to America!

The move was over before the family knew it and they settled in a very modest, two story, brownstone in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. Many other Italian families had done the same, and so it wasn’t long before the D’Eliso family found and joined a local Italian Presbyterian church. The pastor worked tirelessly to provide a refuge where other Italian immigrants could maintain their traditions. Here they formed many solid bonds as, together, they became acclimated to their new surroundings.

It was there, in 1941, in an area known as East Liberty that Pop’s middle son, Anthony, met and married the beautiful Columba Faldo. As their family grew they enjoyed the love and traditions that are very much a part of every Italian family. In 1941 Anthony became a baker and cook for the US Army during WWII. After the war ended, in 1943, the call of California was not lost on this soldier boy, turned man. It didn’t take long before the D’Eliso family picked up roots and headed to the new “Promised Land”. In 1956 with the cry on their lips, “California here we come!” they left Pennsylvania behind.

1961 found Anthony and Columba settled in Whittier, California where they opened the D’Eliso’s Bakery. Their daughter, Gloria, and son, Anthony, worked right alongside their parents after school. They assisted with the daily tasks of operating a bakery, working in the kitchen and at the counter as needed. While the family worked side-by-side, in the kitchen baking, the secret family recipes passed from generation to generation. As the young Anthony grew and matured and learned the secrets from his father his love for baking multiplied. As time passed, the elder, Anthony retired and the younger continued on in the baking tradition with the D’Eliso’s family bakery.

During the six years that young Anthony was maturing as a baker in his own right, his sister, Gloria, was busy raising a family. It wasn’t until after a recent extended family trip to Italy to visit Gloria’s grandparent’s villages of Abruzzi and Calabria, the family legacy and passion for baking and serving authentic Italian cookies and cakes was once again ignited. The decision was made to fan those flames as the family meandered down the narrow streets of Italy with their youngest daughter, Elizabeth. When once again on American soil they formed My Little Taste of Italy with the promise to bake and serve, with passion, authentic Italian cookies and cakes.

Today, the family owns and operates My Little Taste of Italy, which has become world famous for their authentic treats. When Liz, as Elizabeth came to be known, created her unique recipe for Cappuccino Brownies the news of their rich and creamy, to die for, goodness quickly spread. It wasn’t long before Liz’s Cappuccino brownies were dubbed “Orgasmic!” by Jan Verhoeff, one of their loyal customers.

Along with the assistance of Gloria’s daughter, Liz, and her grandchildren, My Little Taste of Italy fills orders all across the US and has been known to mail their goodies to the soldiers serving overseas as well. Even the smallest, Baby Luke, at a mere 8 months old, was spied with a stirring spoon in his tiny little hand.

They have recently created two new flavors of biscotti that they will packaged in a very unique way for Valentine’s Day delivery that can be sent to your soldier as well as to your stateside loved ones. This new offering comes in two flavors; the Grand Marnier dipped in rich, Italian chocolate, and their Spumoni flavored biscotti drizzled with the same. For those that wish to add a little spice to the mix a twist to an old favorite has been created. Florentine cookies have been given a whole new zing with the addition of chocolate chips, espresso beans and cayenne pepper to the standard slivered almonds. This alternative Valentine special has been aptly named “Hot Mommas” and is sure to spice up your loved ones life.

What sets My Little Taste of Italy apart is not just the true old world recipes but the added touch created by their imaginative presentation. Their Valentine package, I am told, will be packed in with an assortment of fun items like wedding favor bubbles and wax lips. “I am sure this gift pack will spark the fire in your loved one this Valentine’s Day” states Gloria.
