Ive had a cheap Mr Coffee for 10 years. It says it shuts off after two hours, the heating plate. I bought one of those Watt-Killers to see exactly what was using what. Turns out the coffee maker uses almost 1000 watts when brewing but when the brew cycle turns off it stops using electricity. The plate stays warm for hours not using any electric power, the clock doesn't even register.
References :
I don't think that they were intended to be left on 24/7. If you were to take one that is broken apart you will notice as to how cheaply they are made. How they happen to last as long as they do I have no idea.
One thing I do know is the more often they break, the more the company makes buy selling you another one.
References :
They are designed to fail. Dont leave yours on. You cant believe the amount of electricity they suck up. About as much as a toaster oven or an air conditioner. Get an insulated carafe to keep your coffee in after it brews. And it will taste better as well.
References :
the maker itself ,depending on make, model, and frequency of use, last between 2 and 10 years on average. the carafes (glass coffee pot things) are very fragile and break easily (hand wash). if the case is your leaving it on for long periods of time, you may want to invest in one of the auto off models ( range from between 25 and 50 dollars) as the heating elements will burn out.
References :
personal experience

How long are coffee machines (drip kind) suppose to last,...?
Mine always break. I leave them on for a long time, maybe they over-heat? I thought they were made to be left on. Why do they break so easily?
